Pixeldreams creates 15 3D Characters for the "Souls of Venice" Exhibition - Venice Biennale | Lorenzo Quinn

Lorenzo Quinn is a renowned Italian sculptor, son of the famous actor Anthony Quinn. Quinn has gained international renown for his figurative sculptures that often explore universal themes such as love, faith, and the human condition.

His work is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and the ability to convey deep emotions through the human form, using materials such as bronze and aluminum. His works have been exhibited around the world, and he is particularly known for his monumental public sculptures that seek to interact with the environment and provoke reflection in viewers.

The Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious contemporary art events in the world. Pixeldreams' Participation in the 2024 edition consisted of giving value to a new and impressive exhibition titled "Souls of Venice" inside the Ca'Rezzonico Museum of Venice and the Doge's Palace.

The Souls of Venice are 15 sculptural figures that represent 15 illustrious personalities of Venice, among which are figures of the stature of Marco Polo, the composer Vivaldi, or the Painter Titian, among others. The sculptures, strategically placed, seem to represent a dialogue between them. They have a fragile and wired finish that changes with daylight but come to life holographically for the visitor through Augmented Reality and the use of Photogrammetry. After downloading the APP and scanning the marker on each sculpture, users can interact with each 3D character in 360º on a real scale, with the clothing and attire of the time, in addition to being able to listen to a voiceover from the character themselves, in this case scripted by Quinn, both in English and Spanish.

The message behind the 3D characters is deep and multifaceted. Quinn seeks to draw attention to Venice's fragility in the face of contemporary challenges such as climate change and mass tourism. The sculptures, with their serene and meditative expressions, invite viewers to reflect on the importance of preserving not only Venice, but also other cultural heritages at risk around the world. To enhance and give value to this speech, Pixeldreams represented the Virtual flooding of the Ca'Rezzonico Palace using the most advanced 3D Animation and Special Effects (VFX) techniques, allowing users to observe the 3D character of Marco Polo perched on a Virtual Gondola, in a completely flooded Palace.
Quinn's intervention at the Venice Biennale not only highlighted her artistic ability, but also her commitment to global issues, using her art to raise awareness and promote dialogue. Her work at the Biennale has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, cementing his position as an internationally relevant artist whose work transcends aesthetics to address issues of vital contemporary importance.

Benefits of creating 3D characters in Museums and artistic exhibitions to revive Historical Characters

  • Augmented Interactivity: Augmented reality (AR) and 3D character creation allows visitors to interact with historical figures in a dynamic way. This direct interaction makes learning more engaging and memorable, facilitating an emotional connection to the story. Users can ask questions and receive answers in real time, enriching the educational experience and allowing for a deeper understanding of historical events and figures.
  • Access to Expanded Information: Through the use of 3D Characters and Virtual Avatars, visitors can access a large amount of additional information that would not be available in a traditional exhibition. This includes historical data, detailed biographies, and cultural context, all presented in a visual and engaging way. The possibility of exploring different layers of information allows for personalization of learning according to the interests of each visitor.
  • Improved Knowledge Retention: The combination of visual and auditory stimuli in AR improves information retention. Watching and listening to 3D historical figures explain their own stories makes it easier to understand and memorize facts. This form of multi-sensory learning is particularly beneficial for students, who can retain more information more effectively.
  • Universal Accessibility: AR can make history education accessible to people with different abilities and learning styles. For example, visitors with hearing impairments can benefit from closed captioning and transcription, while those with visual impairments can use descriptive audio. This technology democratizes access to cultural education.
  • Engagement and Attraction of Young Audiences: The incorporation of 3D Characters through augmented reality in museums attracts a younger audience, accustomed to digital technology. Young people, in particular, are more motivated to visit museums that offer interactive and technologically advanced experiences. This not only increases visitation, but also fosters an early interest in history and culture.
  • Heritage Preservation: Using Augmented Reality to bring historical figures to life helps preserve and promote cultural heritage without the need to manipulate delicate physical artifacts. Digital reconstructions can provide an accurate representation of historical figures and events, minimizing the risk of damage to valuable and fragile objects.
  • Personalized Experiences: AR allows you to personalize the museum experience according to individual interests and preferences. Visitors can select which historical figures they wish to “meet” and which topics to explore in greater depth. This personalization (creating 3D characters) improves visitor satisfaction and offers a more relevant and meaningful educational experience.
  • Simulations of Historical Events: Holograms and AR can recreate important historical events, offering visitors an immersive view of key moments in history. This ability to simulate events provides valuable context and helps visitors better understand the circumstances and impact of these events on the course of history.
  • Supporting Formal Education: AR in museums complements formal educational curricula by providing practical and visual experiences. Teachers can use 3D historical figures to enrich their lessons, offering students a tangible way to connect with the topics they study in class. This can reinforce and expand the learning obtained in the classroom.
  • Innovation and Competitiveness: The adoption of advanced technologies such as the creation of 3D characters and virtual avatars places museums at the forefront of cultural innovation. This not only improves public perception of the institution, but can also attract funding and collaborations. By staying up to date with the latest technological trends, museums ensure their relevance and competitiveness in the 21st century.
